Do you REALLY have to brush your teeth 3 times a day???
YES!!!.... IF... you are just quickly "going through the motions" when you are brushing. (Thinking about where your car keys are and how late you are for work!)
Yes, if you've had a cavity or needed a filling in the last 3 years.
Brushing is a "neurologic habit" which means that you can do it without thinking. Unfortunately, if you miss a spot, then you'll miss it day after day. Those missed areas will be the first to bleed when you floss, or cause your dental hygienist to get all a fluster!
No,... You can brush once a day (right before bed)... IF ... you meet ALL of the following criteria. (Seriously,... be honest with yourself...)
- 1. You are methodically taking the time to brush every nook and cranny around every tooth - chewing surface, tongue sides and cheek sides. (Not while thinking about your "to do" list.)
- 2. You are spending at least 2 FULL minutes. (Time yourself!... Two minutes is a long time!)
- 3. You have not had a cavity or needed a filling in the last 5 years.
- 4. If you do not drink soda, sports drinks, or other "snack" bottled drinks.
BUT,... Here's the kicker....
It takes the bacteria in your mouth 24 hours to multiply (They double, and double again.) And yes,.. if you wondered what the big deal is,... they are essentially "pooping" in your mouth, minute by minute. It is the waste products of their metabolism that is so acidic and harmful to your teeth and gums.
The point is to reduce the bacteria "load" in your mouth to the least possible amount, then there are fewer to reproduce, multiply and "relieve themselves".
So brushing every nook and cranny is critical - Thoughtfully, deliberately - for 2 full minutes.
